🚛 Big Changes Coming June 2025: FMCSA Streamlines DOT Medical Certification Process for CDL Drivers
It all begins with an idea.
Attention commercial drivers: Starting June 23, 2025, a new FMCSA rule will change how your DOT medical certification is handled — and it’s all being streamlined to make things easier for you.
Here’s what you need to know.
✅ What’s Changing?
The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) is launching an automated system that will:
Let your medical examiner (like us at Healing Touch Chiropractic) electronically submit your exam results directly to FMCSA.
Then, FMCSA will automatically send those results to your state DMV.
Your medical status will appear on your driving record (MVR) without you needing to do anything else.
🛠 What You No Longer Have to Do (If You’re a CDL Driver)
If you’re a CDL holder (Class A or B) operating interstate, you will no longer need to:
Bring your Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) to the DMV.
Provide a copy of your MEC to your employer (though you can if you want to keep one for your own records).
This will all be taken care of automatically after your exam.
🧾 What We’ve Already Been Doing
At Healing Touch Chiropractic, we already submit 100% of DOT exam results to the FMCSA within 1 calendar day — so this change doesn’t affect how we operate.
You’re in good hands — we’ve got it covered.
🟨 What About Non-CDL or Class C Drivers?
If you don’t hold a CDL, or you’re a Class C driver carrying passengers or hazardous materials, you still need to carry your MEC and give a copy to your employer and DMV.
Your results will still be submitted to FMCSA, but your state won’t automatically update your medical status.
If you're unsure whether you're classified as an interstate or intrastate driver, check with your employer. This can affect what paperwork you still need to handle.
🧠 Tips to Stay Compliant
Make sure your self-certification with the DMV is current.
If your medical card expires, your CDL may be downgraded automatically after 60 days.
Always verify your MVR to ensure it reflects your most recent medical certification.
